Moving your blog from WordPress to your own domain

28 Jan

I am a tech savvy person. I own my own domains, build small websites, custom built my home computer. But i was still a little nervous moving my blog from barefootandbrilliant.wordpress.com to www.barefootandbrilliant.com

Turns out it was very easy to achieve and comes with some benefits!

I decided to do this mainly so i could put some google adsense up on the blog. Using wordpress doesnt allow you to have any ads.
Also i like being the master of the own domain. The possibilities are endless when it comes to branding and expansion in the future. Here is how to do it…

Go Daddy Featured Offer: 30% Off New Product Purchases: Expires 1/28/13

How to do it.

Step 1: Buy your own domain name and hosting account. I use www.godaddy.com for both.
Godaddy Coupons: Register your domain for just $5.99 a year! Click here for 20% off hosting!

Step 2: If you are using godaddy its very simple to install wordpress. First you just need to attach your domain to the hosting account. Once inside your hosting account you will see a WordPress icon. It is a popular app and can be installed with just the click of a button. Thats pretty much it!!

Step 3: Log in to your wordpress.com blog. Go to the dashboard of your blog and go to Tools > Export. Click the Export (Free) option. Export all content and then click “Download Export File”. Save the .XML file somewhere on your computer that you will be able to find easily.

Step 4: Once WordPress is done installing on your godaddy hosting, navigate to the Dashboard > Tools and this time select Import. It is time to import that .xml file you exported from the WordPress.com blog. So go ahead and navigate to wherever you saved that .xml file and now upload it using the Import tool in your new blog.

Thats about it! You may need to play around with the theme and some options. You will lose any “likes” as well, because that is just part of the WordPress.com community. I believe you will lose followers as well. So what I did to encourage them to follow me to my new domain, was to post an update to each blog post, letting the visitor know about the blog’s new home. If you want, you can pay for a redirect service on your wordpress.com blog to redirect visitors automatically to your new domain.

Contact me or comment on this post if you want some help with this or have any questions I will be glad to assist!!!

Now that my blog is up and running on the new domain, i am focusing on customizing it and making it pretty. I’m sure it will always be a work in progress so please follow and check back periodically. I LOVE to hear from people visiting my page. Please send me a message to say hello, ask a question, or to give your feedback. Thank you!!!
